Heath Ceramics is a glass, ceramics & concrete company specializing in ceramic tile and tableware.

In , Goebl explains, a conversation occurred on the lawn at a Cooper Hewitt summer party between team members from Artek and Heath Ceramics. Not long after, the two companies, recognising shared affinities for natural materials and conscientious craftsmanship, made the decision to partner on a series of limited-edition products.

Six different tile top designs have been made using new experimental glazing techniques that have been applied by hand. Each design is made and assembled in a limited run of six in Finland before the tiles are installed in San Francisco. A matching ceramic Coupe platter is available separately. The joint effort is capped off by an installation created by LA design studio The Archers, on view at the Vitra New York showroom through mid-December. Inviting visitors to imagine what might have been, had Edith Heath and Alvar Aalto — co-founders of Heath Ceramics and Artek, respectively — had a fateful encounter of their own decades earlier.

The installation depicts a fictional meeting in a hotel conference room in the early s, littered with evidence of a fruitful exchange: paperwork, a slide reel, ceramic samples at rest in an open suitcase. Holding court is a finished Aalto Trolley adorned in custom glazed Heath tiles — the result of both the imaginary collaboration between Heath and Aalto, and the real one that occurred between their modern-day companies. You can find her online and on Twitter. Heath Ceramics is a hallmark of mid-century modern design, and behind this long-running Sausalito-based company lies the legacy of a strong woman whose personal history, politics and aesthetic melded together to give Heath Ceramics its unmistakable DNA. Born Edith Kiertzner, Edith Heath coaxed simple beauty from the earth beneath her.

Edith Heath was born on May 24, She was the second of seven children and grew up on a farm in Iowa. It was a life filled with chores and responsibilities at home including embroidering and baking bread. Just before Edith graduates high school, the family lost its farm and sold most of their possessions. To help make ends meet, Edith took on a job as a bookkeeper and teller with the Iowa Public Service Company. There, she was influenced by the theories of John Dewey and pragmatism.

While working there, Edith met Brian Heath, whose comparatively exotic life intrigued the Iowa farm girl. Brian had an itinerant childhood, traveling with his mother to Guatemala at age four and then to Greenwich Village in New York, where she typed manuscripts for writers.
